| Technical
training, or vocational education, classes at Yosemite High School are
offered through the Regional Occupational Program (ROP).
This program fills out the whole spectrum of education for students in the Yosemite Union High School District. The importance of technical training is to prepare students for the work force where a large percent of all jobs will be technical-trained jobs. Jobs of the future are this type and these courses speak to the future. The focus is school-to-work. The ROP courses at YHS are available to adults in the community as well as to students. There is no charge to enroll. Courses being offered are animal health care, auto mechanics, building trades, careers with children, drafting, Emergency Medical Technician I, law enforcement / corrections career, office practice I, office practice II, school bus driver and welding. There are also fire science refresher courses offered throughout the semester through ROP. ROP instructors meet at least twice a year with an advisory committee that is made up of people in the field of study. They discuss the class work and determine if it is the correct training and up-to-date. Ninety percent of the classes are articulated with community colleges in what is called a 2+2 program. Through this program, courses taken at YHS count toward community college credit as well. The ROP classes at Yosemite High are basically equivalent to community college courses in the same subjects. Some of the ROP classes are taught by full-time faculty members at Yosemite High while others are taught by professionals from the community. ROP courses have been offered at YHS almost from the beginning of the school. |
