Success on many levels for tennis
MALISSA TRENHOLM

The 2003 fall season for the Yosemite High School girls’ tennis team “was a success on many different levels,” says coach Stan Lawrence. “The team was very coachable and seemed to enjoy being with each other.” Lawrence smiled while saying he enjoyed coaching a group who got along well.

The team had an outstanding individual effort from junior Kaitlyn LeRoy who took first place at the league tournament and won one game in the valley tournament.

Although this year’s league record was 2-6, Lawrence feels the expectations will be higher next year for there will be eight incoming seniors who are very talented in many ways. He says he expects their commitment level to be high in order to be successful. He also hopes the team will at least finish first or second in league next year because the seniors will have the potential to do so.

Number one on the varsity team, Kaitlyn LeRoy, “esteems herself by winning,” states Lawrence. “It was nice to have senior Kim Montag, number two on varsity back after being injured for a year. Her athleticism took her far.”

Lawrence also recognizes the number three player, junior Shannon Bartoo, for her improvement, relaxation and the confidence she possesses on the court, and number four, junior Jessica Little, for “bringing a lot of enthusiasm and energy to the team.”

A quiet and committed player, number five, sophomore Jennifer Scott, “could really make a leap next year.” Lawrence applauds number six, junior Malissa Trenholm’s “desire to improve and win more matches.”

Lawrence congratulates number seven, junior Veronica Stewart, for being a “consistent, steady and enthusiastic player,” and number eight, sophomore Jennifer Norman, as well for having a committed and consistent attitude.

Lawrence also stated he appreciates the junior varsity team for being a “fun loving” group of girls who have the potential to take over the team in the years to come.

The banquet will be held on November 19 at Hondo’s restaurant at 7 p.m., to have “a last chance reflection on the season,” says Lawrence, and to hand out individual awards and team and individual photographs.

Lawrence also hopes to take the team to a Fresno State tennis match in order to expose them to higher level players later this year, as well as building an “awesome float” for homecoming next year.

Co-championship for volleyball team

The Badger varsity volleyball team earned a co-championship this year with Sierra and San Joaquin Memorial.

The YHS team beat Sierra three games out of five to be part of the three-way honor.

The team moved to the semi-finals where the Badgers lost a heartbreaker to Porterville High School in the fifth game in mid-November.

Boys’ basketball begins

The varsity and junior varsity boys’ basketball teams will meet Liberty High at home December 19 with games at 5:30 and 7:30. The freshmen will plan Madera High the same day at 4 p.m. in the Harry Baker Gym at YHS.

So far this season the teams have been playing in tournaments and a scrimmage against Fresno.

The next home games will be a frosh tourney January 10 and varsity and JV games against Tranquility January 14.

The first league game will be January 16 at home against San Joaquin Memorial with all three teams playing.
