Coach
Kent Lincoln expects the Yosemite High wrestling team to be the Central Sequoia
League (CSL) Champions this year and one to two individuals to qualify for the
State Championship Tournament.
The
varsity team is made up of 15 wrestlers, including sophomores Casey Marr and
Tim Springer. They have about 35 to 40 wrestlers in the program. The junior
varsity team has about 25 wrestlers.
The
team started its season November 13 with conditioning. Lincoln’s team had a
successful season last year, with an 8-0 win-loss record. They were undefeated
as they earned the CSL title.
Lincoln
has been the wrestling coach for 10 years at YHS. He was a Yosemite High
student and was part of the wrestling team all four years of high school.
According
to Becher Marr, a junior, some of the team members have been wrestling together
for a long time and they know one another very well. “I think the program is
real good because all the wrestlers are good friends, which helps out a lot,”
Marr says.
“I’ve
been wrestling since fourth grade and have been on varsity all four years of
high school,” says Robert Gorman, a senior.
At
this school, wrestlers have gone very far in the sport, such as Caleb Roope who
was second for state in 1989 and Lincoln, who was sixth for state in 1987.
According
to Lincoln, wrestlers to watch this season are seniors Jeremy Bebout, Rick
Jenkins, Brandon Siegers and Greg Montgomery and junior Andrew Siegers. Lincoln
thinks that these wrestlers will excel in the sport and overall will have a
great season.
