Many of drivers know by word of mouth what is illegal, but few may really know the laws. New laws have been passed and changes have been made recently. Many students will be affected by these new laws and by more new ones to come very soon. The permit law has gone back and forth. The new age to receive a permit, including the “pink slip” is 15 1/2.

After a student passes drivers education, the teacher gives them a “pink slip.”Even those who are 14 when they finish the drivers’ ed class have to go back at 15 1/2 and receive their “pink slip” then.

When students go to get their permit, they take the slip to the DMV. In order to take the driving course test, a person has to have the “pink slip”with them. The DMV keeps the slip and records on the record that the person has successfully completed a driver's training class.

When a student first receives their license, they have to wait six months before they can have anyone in the car with them at any time. After the first six months are over, they may have a passenger in the car, but there is still a curfew. The first year of a student’s license, the curfew is that they cannot be out between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m. After the first year is over, that curfew drops.

The first year a student receives their license, they have to go back in four years to renew it. After that, it is every five years. Students don’t have to retake the driving course test when they renew their license if they have a
clean record.

If a person has a clean record, the DMV will call them and they can order their new license over the phone. The fee is $15 when it is sent by mail.
If a person doesn’t have a clean record, the DMV may ask them to come in and renew the license in person instead of ordering it over the phone. Plus, they may ask a person to retake the driving course test if their record is not clean.

Other than the new permit age, one other law has come into affect that affects high school students. Last year, the price for a driver’s license was $12, this year, it has doubled to $24.
