Justen Peek named CIF Scholar Athlete
of the year

Yosemite High School senior Justen Peek has been selected as
the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Central Section Scholar-Athlete
of the Year. This award honors students who have excelled in athletics as well
as academics throughout their high school career. Peek has also been recognized
as a Pitman Scholar, which means he is a class valedictorian with a grade point
average of 4.0 or higher. He is the second
student in the history of YHS to receive this award. Caleb Roope was honored for the 1988-89 school year as
California Scholar/Athlete of the Year. Other YHS students have been named
finalists over the years. Peek has participated in football, golf, basketball,
track and baseball during his years at YHS.
As a freshman, he was named the Most Valuable Player in
football and was the low scorer of the year in varsity golf. In his sophomore
year he was quarterback on the varsity football team. He was named
Underclassman Player of the Year and he made all-league.
He also participated in basketball and track. As a junior,
he was on the football and track teams. He was the First Team All League
quarterback and the First Team All League defense at safety. This year, as a
senior, he has been on the football
and baseball teams. He was named the Central Sequoia League Defensive Player of
the Year in football. He was also All-League quarterback and was named to the
First Team All Stars by the Fresno Bee as a linebacker. He broke two previous
passing records at YHS this year.
This summer, he will be a linebacker on the North/South All
Star Team playing June 28 at Chowchilla High School. July 20 he will play in
the City/County All Star Game at Grizzly Stadium. He will be a linebacker in
that game as well. Peek was made Academic All League in every sport in every
season he played. During his high school years, he organized the bowling league
for the special education students on the YHS campus.
