Tight budget times ahead for district

The
Yosemite Joint Union High School District will deficit spend for the
next two years, using money from its ending balance. This year, the
district expects to deficit spend by $290,000. Last year the deficit
spending was $225,000.
There is enough money in the ending balance for the district to deficit
spend for this period of time, according to District Superintendent
Bill McCabe.
The projected revenue for the 2003-04 year is $10.06 million and the
projected expenditures are $10.35 million.
The state did not give schools a cost of living allowance (COLA) this
year but it is assumed that schools will receive a 1.84 percent COLA
in 2004-05 and 2.4 percent in 2005-06.
In an effort to curb expenses, the district proposes not to hire any
new positions through 2005; establish a 10 percent reduction in supplies
and operating expenses and freeze all but essential expenses.
Eighty-four percent of the district budget goes to salaries and benefits.
