Spring is on its way, the weather is beautiful and it seems everyone on campus is getting ready for those warm summer days that are close by. It's almost as if the girls on campus went from wearing pants to skirts in a 24 hour period.

Spring seems to be the time for the wrap up of our classes, somewhat, like we have climbed up a big hill and are now on the top, looking down awaiting the nice fast-paced jog down. As we frequently mention, it seems that stress, frustration and procrastination, have gotten the best of some of the students here at YHS. If you can believe that we are almost there, trying our best will have paid off in just a few mere months.

Prom is just around the corner, as well as senior day. Registration for next year's freshman class has taken place, and many of the seniors here at YHS are preparing, if not ready, to take their entrance exams for college.
Many of our major projects have been assigned and we are ready to welcome spring break with open arms. So what's everyone doing? The word “beach” has been often used these last couple of days, as students try to plan for their fun, relaxing, no stress week. Will it be San Diego? Pismo? Morro Bay? So many choices, so little time, right? Wrong.

Let's not get too ahead of ourselves, spring break is a tradition that we should be grateful to have, while some take it for granted.

Teens now days are becoming severely hurt year after year because of things such as drug abuse and drunk driving. So, although you may be having fun, stay close to those friends who may need your support and protection. According to connecting with kids.com, over the last several years, tales of alcohol poisoning, illegal drug use, injuries, rape and death during students’ weeklong getaways have become common news headlines.

Be aware of your surroundings and listen to your gut instinct. If traveling to a foreign country this spring break The University of Michigan News and information services advises to be aware of the legal systems in other countries, laws are very different from those in the US, so don't try anything illegal, for the punishment could be far worse.

As we all know, having a “tan” is becoming very essential these days. While there are many options on the market, the one place we tend to tan is also, you guessed it - .at the beach. For some reason many think that being out in the sun for five hours will not harm them whatsoever, but perhaps give them just somewhat of a glow.

According to the American Cancer Society, people with too much exposure to the sun, tanning lamps and tanning booths are at greater risk for all types of skin cancer, including melanoma. Make sunscreen your best friend, keep it by you and apply after you swim, and/or sweat excessively while out on the beach. You will save yourself from potential risk.

This is not to say don't enjoy yourself this spring break, you should. Just be aware, and don't do something you might regret later on in life, we still have our whole future ahead of us.
