YHS students winners at History Day

Veronica
Stewart won first place in the Individual Exhibit category of the Madera
County History Day competition held at Yosemite High March 11.
Her winning entry was Encounter in the Ardennes: Battle of the Bulge.
The members of the winning Group Exhibit were Lauren Cano, Ricsie Hernandez
and Alyse Stolp. Their project was Closer Look: Galileo Galilei.
Second place in Group Exhibit went to the team of Chelsea Niell and
Hannah Millar with Theresienstadt: The Model Ghetto.
Third place went to Blake Burrett and Chris Flaherty for Russian Soviet
Invasion of Afghanistan.
Honorable mention in Group Exhibits went to the following teams:
Domenic Di Tomaso, Nicole Chirolo and Carmen George, An Exploration
of the Psychological Terror During the Holocaust;
Jeff Parrish, Gabriella Ripley-Phipps, Ashley Epply and Amit Gurnani,
We All Want to Change the World: America's Encounter with the Hippie
Movement;
Shannon Bartoo, Christine Casner and Kristin Lukan, UFO Encounters at
Roswell NM: Fact or Fiction;
Diana Davis and Jennifer Munn, Lewis and Clark (they also won the Creativity
Award);
Sean Ratchford, Justin Leithem, Lauren Cook and Casey Lucas, Exploring
Coarsegold, California and its Encounters with Gold;
Caitlin Blum and Taylar Hutchison, Alabama's Encount-er with the Civil
Rights Movement.
Michael McCarty received honorable mention in the Essay category with
his work on Lewis and Clark: Why Should We Care?
The theme for this year's History Day competition was Exploration, Encounter
and Exchange in History.
Judges were Judy Durr, Cory Booth, Rick Comstock, Tammy Carter and Susan
Pennell.
