A diversity of people makes the world an interesting place
KATHRYN WIGLEY

A diversity of people is all around us. There is not one city, town, state or school that has the same race, ethnicity or one type of person. That’s what makes our world interesting. If everyone were the same, it would get boring.
Do you stereotype a person by looking at their clothes? Do you look at a person’s appearance and decide if they are good enough to talk to you or even walk next to you? Diversity is more than cultural background. It’s a gathering of everything that has become a part of our lives, good and bad, which makes us unique.

Do you want to go to school everyday and have to worry about someone judging or labeling you? Stereotyping is everywhere, including Yosemite High. There are a number of ‘groups’ that are in our school.

Just because you wear boots and a hat doesn’t mean you are a cowboy. Wearing studs and black doesn’t make you a punk or rebel.

Not only do the students stereotype and judge, but so do adults. It might be hard for them to admit it and say that they criticize, but they do. Some teachers that I have had in the past look at students clothing and think that that can tell if they are hardworking, lazy, positive or someone looking for trouble.

A person does not have to dress a certain way to be considered good enough. No one is perfect. It's hard for some of us to tell ourselves that. We all want to be perfect; we try our hardest and beat ourselves up about little things. For example, how we look.

People should be happy for who they are, and not what they say or do to make themselves feel or look better in front of anyone. I don’t know why people worry so much about what other people say.

Stereotyping and judging doesn’t get you anywhere in the world. It makes others feel bad and they should have no right to talk to that person that way. They have no right to tell someone what to wear or where to go. They cannot tell anyone what to say or who to hang out with.

It’s your life, why don’t you live it? Don’t let someone else control your life and make it harder than it has to be.

Be yourself and don’t let people walk all over you like a doormat. You are your own person and nothing can change that. Not the clothes on your back or the words in your mouth. This is your life, are you who you want to be? Don’t be something that you’re not; don’t follow the crowd.
