I would choose to relive the entire century starting at 1900
MALISSA TRENHOLM

If I was ever so lucky as to be granted the opportunity to relive a decade of my choice, I would have a hard time choosing, for if I had my way, I would choose to relive the whole century starting from the 1900’s, up until now.

It would be so moving to be able to live in the time period of Ronald Reagan's presidency, to be a German under Hitler’s rule, to fight in Vietnam, or to experience America’s Great Depres-sion.

In the 50’s classic cars were favored, and teens danced to romantic music at parties, instead of doing drugs. Reliving the 60’s and 70’s would be fascinating, for peace and acceptance was a top priority, or to also wear the wacky fashions in the 80’s, or to experience the uprising in fashion independence for women and the movement for women’s rights in the “roaring 20’s and 30’s.”

In all the movies I have viewed, and all the history lectures I have listened to, the 20’s fashion and its fads look to be what I would love to experience the most. The clothes women and girls wore were very cute, classy and proper, like the halter-top summer dresses as well as the heeled shoes. The men wore very nice dress clothes that were by far better than the clothes that are so called, “in” today. Who wouldn’t love the zoot suits and wing tipped shoes?

I have also thought of how it would be to listen to the popular music in certain decades. Jazz and oldies singers sang of romance, and the appreciation of the women in their lives.

Songs in the 60’s and 70’s were also very expressive of war and love. The music then was sung and played by very talented people, with real instruments, and the songs were written by insightful songwriters.

For instance, people like Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zepplin, or bands like The Who, The Eagles, or The Rolling Stones are bands and people to be appreciated in the history of music. Thanks to the 50’s, bringing Elvis Presley, “the king of rock and roll,” started the revolution of respected music. The “big band era” must have been amazing to live in as well. “Swinging”at clubs for hours was the people of the 20’s and 30’s version of a night out.

The music now has changed immensely, and not for the good. I like some of the music now, but I can’t bring myself to admitting I truly appreciate it. I don’t appreciate the cuss words and the degrading of women. I also have no respect for singers who computerize their voices in order to sound talented. Music today is no longer about talent, it is mainly about sex appeal.

The same goes with the fashion and fads of today. I like some of the clothes of today, yet I dislike the fact that all the clothes are revealing, and that girls feel they have to wear them in order to look appealing to men.

If there were a store I knew of near me that sold clothes from another era, for instance from the 20’s or 30’s, I would break the “big no no” rules of the 21st century and buy my whole wardrobe there.

The next time you have a free moment, exercise your brain and think about a decade you would enjoy reliving, because any decade is better than what this decade is coming to be.
