YHS Swimming Pool

Work is on schedule for the swimming pool complex at Yosemite High School. It is expected to open in July or August. The pool will be open to the public when school is not in session. Pictured above is the pool and below are the buildings that will complete the complex. Funds for the pool have come from the district’s bond, state bond funds, state matching funds and private donations. A swimming pool has been a high priority for area residents for many years. When YHS was built in the 1970s plans called for a pool at that time and, in fact, a swimming coach was hired. There is a shallow end to the pool that will allow people to roll a wheel chair into the water. The school plans to implement swimming programs for students, including competitive swim sports. Construction on the pool started last winter. Yosemite Joint Union High School District Superintendent Bill McCabe notes that within the next 18 months all of the projects promised to the voters in 1998 when they approved an $11.76 million bond will be complete. When the construction project is complete, the campus will accommodate 1500 students.

New YHS Classrooms

Ground preparation is continuing for the 23-classroom building that will be constructed at the front end of the Yosemite High School campus (top photo). Mounds of crushed granite are on site as part of the project. District officials expect the foundation to be poured in May. The building should be ready for use at the beginning of the 2005-06 school year.

YHS Track

Work is also underway on the football stadium and track (bottom photo). The football field will be renovated and a new all-weather track will be installed. The track surface will be made with recycled California tires; a portion of the cost of the project is funded through a $100,000 grant from the California Waste Management Board that requires the surface be made from recycled tires. It is hoped that the football field will be ready for graduation ceremonies in June. New ball fields have recently been completed and are being used by the baseball and softball teams this spring.
