GATE students attend Peach Blossom Festival

Coarsegold Elementary School students in the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program participated in the Peach Blossom Oral Interpretation Festival at California State University, Fresno recently. They competed in pairs, trios and small groups. Each group from CES received the highest rating, Superior. One group, shown above, performed for their peers at the 3rd quarter awards assembly. The students are (left to right): Erin Asis, Eirena Ewert, Erik Strauss, Jackson Soares, Destiny Anger and Kiana Miller. Students from Valerie Porter’s third grade class and Mary Ann Englehart’s fifth grade class participated. GATE students have also visited the Castle Science and Technology Center in Atwater and visited the Chaffee Zoo’s Wild Connections Lab. Beginning in May, GATE students may enroll in the Virtual School for the Gifted in Australia. They can participate in a web-based course with three to five other students from around the world. Classes will range from a mystery writing course to ancient Egyptian civilization.

Flat Stanleys

The Flat Stanleys, created by students in Valerie Porter’s third grade class at Coarsegold Elementary School had many adventures during the year (see photo on Page 1). One additional adventure was running in the Los Angeles Marathon with parent Scott Browar. Students from the class are shown above with Browar, Porter and their Flat Stanleys.

Science and theatre class made possible with grant

A grant from PG & E has made it possible for students from Coarsegold Home School and Rivergold Elem-entary to Get Energized through a 10-week science and theater elective class.

The focus of the class is developing a theater and dance production based on different forms of energy (solar, wind and hydro) and the ways children can actively promote energy efficiency and conservation.
Under the direction of Teena Hagerman and Denise Bausch, 25 students from Coarsegold Home School and Rivergold Elementary are participating in the educational outreach program. Students have already conducted research on alternative forms of energy as well as efficiency and conservation.

Scripts are being developed based on their discoveries and the end result will be an energetic, entertaining and fact-filled 45-minute dance and theater production. Students will also be helping to create their own sets and costumes.

As well as the scientific principles, the project goals for the students include working cooperatively in groups and learning stagecraft, acting skills and dance techniques. Students will also be gaining self-confidence and self-esteem by performing in front of peers, the teachers say.

This production will be performed May 27 at Rivergold Elementary, June 1 at Coarsegold Elementary and June 3 at Raymond Elementary.
