Moon rocks displayed
at Coarsegold schools

Moon rocks will be displayed at Coarsegold and Rivergold schools next month.
The specially sealed clear containers holding three samples of lunar rock and three samples of lunar soil arrived at the Chukchansi Tribal Off-ice April 20 and will remain in the area until June 5.

The rocks will be at Coarsegold Elementary from May 19-23 and at Rivergold Elementary from May 27-June 5.

From May 5-16 they will be at the Chukchansi Tribal Office in Coarsegold with special showings at 4:30 p.m. May 6 and 5 p.m. May 14.

Shirley Lane, a geologist and master teacher who is a tutor with the tribe’s MESA (Math, Engineering and Science Achievement) program, arranged the visit through a NASA program.

To be allowed to borrow these materials, Ms. Lane was required to complete a special training at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratories.

In addition to the moon rocks, Ms. Lane has educational materials, activities and information related to the moon and the space program.

She will have a special microscope at the educational programs to examine the rock’s unique structure.

Appointments can be scheduled for those who cannot attend the scheduled programs.
