Dress Code violations increase in warm weather

With the weather turning warmer, students have put away their winter clothes and are once again wearing their summer apparel.

Yosemite High School Principal Steve Raupp wants to remind parents and students that the district’s dress code is being strictly enforced. Those who are in violation of the code will be sent home to change clothes or their parents will need to bring different clothes to them at school. Students in violation of the dress code are removed from class and remain in the Responsibility Center until they are appropriately attired.

The dress code, which has been approved by the Yosemite Joint Union High School District Board of Trustees, can be found in the Student Handbook, on the school district’s Web site (www.yosemiteuhsd.com) or parents and students can save the copy in this newspaper for reference.

Mr. Raupp stresses that there are several reasons the district has taken a firm stance on the dress code. Inappropriate attire is distracting to other students and to staff and takes away from a meaningful learning environment. In addition to that, the district wants students to be prepared for the world of work and that includes dressing appropriately.

At a recent Job Fair held at Yosemite High, employers consistently stated that the things they look for when hiring people include presentable clothing, clean appearance and first impressions.

“We want our students to be successful when they apply for a job,” Mr. Raupp says. “Part of that success is that they are dressed appropriately and project the image the employer wants. If students adhere to the district dress code, they will most likely meet those expectations.”

The dress code is revisited on a regular basis and revised as needed. This process is through a committee that includes students, staff, parents and community members.
