Open letter to parents of sophomore students regarding the CAHSEE

Dear Parent/Guardian:
This letter is being sent to remind you that your child, along with other students in public high schools throughout the state, will participate in the upcoming administration of the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE). Our school will administer the exam to your child on March 15 and 16. The exam will be administered at the school site during regular school hours. It is important that your child be present on test days.

Your child must meet the CAHSEE requirement as well as other state and local requirements to receive a high school diploma. The primary purpose of the CAHSEE, mandated by state law, is to ensure that students who graduate from high school can demonstrate grade level competency in the state’s academic content standards for reading, writing, and mathematics.

The CAHSEE is divided into two parts: (1) English-language arts, which includes reading and writing and (2) mathematics. All questions on the examination are aligned to California academic content standards, adopted by the State Board of Education. Academic content standards describe what students should know and be able to do at each grade level from kindergarten through grade 12.

Individual student results will be received by our school district ten weeks after the exam is given. Your child’s results will be sent to your home as soon as they are available. Students who do not pass one or both parts of the CAHSEE this spring will have additional opportunities to retake the part(s) not yet passed. Our school will provide additional instruction, if needed, to ensure your child’s success on this exam.

All tenth grade students must take the CAHSEE, including English learners and students with disabilities. Students with disabilities will be permitted to take the test with any accommodation or modification specified in their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan for the CAHSEE, for standardized testing, or for use during classroom instruction and assessment. Students who take the CAHSEE with modifications will receive an invalid score. At the request of a parent/guardian, the school district board of education may waive the requirement to pass one or both parts of the CAHSEE if the student has met the requirements listed in California Education Code Section 60851(c).

For further information about CAHSEE and your child’s participation, contact the Yosemite High School office during regular school hours at 683-4667 or the alternative education office at 683-8801 ext. 311. CAHSEE information also is available on the California Department of Education’s Web site at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/hs.

Signed: School administrators

YHS Students of the month
Adrian Hernandez (left) and Bradly Wilkinson (right), both sophomores at Yosemite High School, were recently honored by Oakhurst Sierra Rotary as Students of the Month for November and December. They were given a savings bond and Student of the Month hooded sweatshirts by Brian Negley from Rotary. Bob Yohn, a counselor at YHS, introduced the recipients to Rotary members.

Ahwahnee High students of the semesterHeidi Nilmeier and Ken Rosetti were named Ahwahnee High School Students of the Semester and Nilmeier was named Rotary Student of the Month in November. Both students were recognized for excellent attendance, academic excellence. positive attitudes and for being team players. Nilmeier finished high school a semester early, graduating at the end of the Fall 2004 semester. She is currently enrolled as a full-time student at Oakhurst Community College. She served as Alternative Education student body president during the Fall of 2004. She served as a mentor to students at Mountain View High School. Rosetti will graduate in June; he is a new student who is “well written, articulate and knowledgeable on a vast array of subjects,” according to his teacher, Brenna Neely.

YHS hosts over 580 bus drivers

Approximately 580 school bus drivers, mechanics, dispatchers, trainers and administrators from over 60 school districts within California attended the 17th annual School Bus Driver In-service at Yosemite High in January.
Bob Austin from the Calif-ornia Department of Edu-cation was the keynote speaker addressing the school bus industry becoming more aware of the dangers posed by terrorism.

Local experts were joined by others from throughout the state to address issues such as night driving, understanding difficult behavior, defensive driving, assertiveness training, stress reduction, new laws and regulations, air pollution and issues such as alternative fuels and idling busses.
Included among the speakers were local California Highway Patrol Officer Todd DenBeste, YHS Special Edu-cation Director Al Nocciolo and two officers from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Other speakers included bus driver training specialists, transportation directors, driving instructors, and victim service advocates.
YJUHSD Director of Trans-portation Virginia Smith and District Transportation Secre-tary Sandy Dew coordinated the event.

“It’s such an honor for us to be able to participate,” Smith said. “Each of the 500-plus drivers will take these skills back to their students and that translates to thousands positively impacted.”
