New facilities make big difference for Ahwahnee High School students

New facilities for Ahwahnee High School
Ahwahnee High School students spend every break playing basketball on their new court, located behind the school on Road 427.

New facilities have been added at Ahwahnee High School in recent weeks. The continuation school has an additional portable classroom, a new basketball court and improved parking.

The new portable is not ready for use yet but when it is completed it will be used for a computer laboratory and a space for special projects and experiments.

Before the new basketball area was completed, students played on a small area near Road 427. Many times, the ball would go into the road, creating a dangerous situation for the students and for drivers.

Staff and students are delighted with the new, paved court at the back of the school. “It has changed the camaraderie of the students,”comments Carolyn Campbell, instructional aide at the school. She said the students have played on the court during every break every day since it was completed, even in the rain and snow.
The court is not regulation size but it is built with regulation lines. Campbell says the girls even join in the games now that they have a better area.

Where the court had been by the road has been turned into a parking area with striped spaces. Now, staff, students and visitors have a safer place to park and don’t have to back into the road to leave the school.
Some of the students at AHS recently refinished a picnic table, using their own money. Another student is building another picnic table as a Senior Project.

Students are now working on landscaping their improv-ed facility.
The staff at AHS give credit to teacher Dennis Otterson for spearheading the project. He worked with district administration to bring the improvements to the school.

Campbell praises the Yosemite Joint Union High School District construction crew for their efforts. “They were just wonderful,” she says.
