Randy
Haggard, principal of Coarsegold School is urging parents to continue
to be aware of the flu season.
“Because of the early start to the flu season, it has been easy to
feel like we are out of the woods for the year,” he says, adding “Please
do not let down your guard with children’s health this flu season!”
While it is extremely important for children to be in school to be
successful, Haggard notes that when they are ill they need to stay
home.
“When children do become ill, it is best if they stay home to ensure
health for themselves and others,” he says.
“If your child does become ill, timely communication with their classroom
teacher can help keep them on track with their learning. Please let
us know in the office if we can assist you with this.”
Haggard says there are several things parents can do to keep their
children healthy or to return them to health.
Eating the right foods and getting enough rest are critical, he says.
“Recent studies indicate that very few of us get enough sleep, but
sleep is especially important for children,” he comments.
“Ten hours or more a night will help them develop through their teen
years.”
The principal notes that at school they encourage students to wash
their hands often and to keep their hands to themselves.
“Children should use soap when washing their hands,” he says, “and
should scrub for at leasat 20 seconds (or as long as it will take
them to sing the ‘Happy Birthday Song’).”
It is also important to tell children to cover their mouth with a
tissue when they sneeze or cough.
