Gifted students have many opportunities for field trips

Screening for gifted students has almost been completed for the year. The last testing date for students is February 26. Those who have a child they would like screened, should go to the office and pick up a permission packet.

Field trips for gifted students have already begun. In January, gifted second and third grade students went to the Chaffee Zoo for the Rainforest Tour. Students learned about wildlife and plants of the rainforest. They sampled foods grown in the rainforest as well.
Gifted second through sixth graders have also been given the opportunity to learn oral presentation skills. Four teams are practicing skits and poems for possible competition at the Peach Blossom Festival at Fresno State in March. “We have excellent participation in this wonderful opportunity,” says Coarse-gold Principal Randy Hag-gard. Coaches are Valerie Porter and Marianne Engle-hart.

Academic Pentathlon is another opportunity available to gifted seventh and eighth graders. The pentathlon consists of five events: Speech, Essay/Literature, Destination ImagiNation, Math, and Super Quiz. The competition began in October and will continue through April when the results will be announced.

There are still a couple of field trips upcoming. On March 30 (2-5) and March 31 (6-8) (updated dates) gifted students will visit Castle Science and Technology Center. They will learn about simple machines, visit the Starlab, and tour the hands on experiments in the Science and Technology Center.

On April 14, Coarsegold fourth through sixth grade gifted students will attend the Chaffee Zoo’s Wild Connections Lab. They will be learning about wildlife on the North American continent.

The school is adding more and more opportunities for students to maximize their potential through the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program.
