American folktales featured in Home School production

Students in the Home School program recently completed a production of “Bigger Than Life” by Cynthia Mercati. This play was a fast-paced, funny, and energetic show featuring stories of four famous characters in American folktales.

The folk tales presented were Bess Call and the City Slicker, Annie Oakley, Sal Fink and the River Pirates, and Pecos Bill. Students practiced weekly from October to December, and two performances were held at Rivergold Elementary.

The students learned a great deal from this experience such as confidence, responsibility, teamwork, im-provisation, and creativity, their teacher says. They also learned aspects of theater production such as blocking, comedic timing, choosing and gathering props, costuming and performing sound effects.

The cast included Cole Reist (8th grade), Gailyn Wensloff (7th grade), Mak-enzie Hagerman (7th grade), Becky O’Connell (7th grade), Chase Hagerman (5th grade), Mia Talesfore (4th grade), and Brianna Shockley (4th grade).

Coarsegold Home School mom Teena Hagerman acted as director and teacher Denise Bausch was co-director. Parents, staff, and students alike praised the actors on their wonderful performances.
