The 9th annual seventh grade Renaissance Faire and Shakespeare Festival was held earlier this month. The day was devoted to having students learn about the daily life of someone who lived during this time period. They lived the day as if they had been transported back to the time of Queen Elizabeth, complete with costumes.

The group Falcon’s Court (www.falconscourt.org) provided students with an opportunity to experience what life was like in the Middle Ages. There were opportunities for the students to practice calligraphy, make candles and create brass rubbings. All of the items that the students created were taken home as a memento of the day.

Students also learned some facets of military life. They were shown how the Elizabethan Soldiers were trained. They were also introduced to some of the weaponry of the time.

As a reminder that even in the Middle Ages, people needed to relax, the students were taught how to play the game rounders. This game is the forefather of both cricket and baseball.

The entire school was treated to a presentation on Falconry. The presentation gave the students a better understanding of birds of prey. Students had the chance to see an owl, a hawk and a falcon. They saw the birds in flight just inches from their heads and learned of both the science and history associated with falconry.

The evening held even more fun and entertainment. Students researched different aspects of life in the Middle Ages as well as different individuals from this time period. Classes created presentations and plays. During the evening following their day of activities, they presented to a board of adults.. Parents and community members were encouraged to ask questions of the students on their particular topic. There was also a performance of the classic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet.
