Coarsegold has perfect
season
JON CORIPPO

Cody Shatka racks up a run after catch against North Fork.
Jackson Glines calls out signals on his way to a 22-touchdown pass performance.
For
an average quarterback, 22 touchdown passes would be a season, if not
a career. For Jackson Glines, it was just another day at the Mountain
Area Flag Football Tournament. Glines’ passing and the precision
routes run by key eighth graders Taylor Cano, Robert Rainey, Ray Millar,
Clint Contero and Cody Shakta powered Coarsegold’s boys team to
a 184-31 scoring advantage during the tournament.
Coarsegold took home the first place, while also completing a perfect
season. Coarsegold’s flag football team has only had one loss
in the last three seasons.
Oak Creek Intermediate was second in the tournament, battling Coarsegold
to a tie that lasted until the final drive when Glines connected with
Cano on a 35 yard bomb that put the Cougars ahead for good. Rivergold
and Raymond’s squad battled to a 16-16 tie until Raymond took
a technical loss as their bus driver had to take them home, giving Rivergold
third place.
The Mountain Area Flag Football Tournament was held at Yosemite High
School for the second straight year, and several varsity football players
helped as referees. The two adult referee helpers were Rick Mazaira
and Keith Koellish.
Sunrise Rotary Student of
the Month
Coarsegold
Elementary eighth grade student Taylor Veater has being recognized by
the Oakhurst-Sierra Sunrise Rotary Club as their September Student of
the Month. Taylor is the school’s student body president and is
involved in student activities and athletics. “She is an outstanding
student and a fine example of Cougar Pride in our community,”
says Principal Randy Haggard. In addition to the honor, Taylor was presented
with a certificate and a $50 US Savings Bond at the Rotary Club morning
meeting.
Rivergold
students fire up the kiln and learn how to make ceramics
HOLLY FOWLER
Rivergold
Elementary students in the sixth through eighth grades are fired up
about ceramics. The first quarter they have had the assistance of Laurie
Zimmerman, a seventh grade parent, who is an expert ceramicist.
The projects that the children have produced include leaf bowls, pinch
pots and mugs, beads, and ceramic tiles which will be used for a mural
to decorate the buildings in the middle school classroom area.
Imaginations have been flourishing, and the kiln has been running as
fast as it can to keep up with the creative creations produced by these
students. Art is an important part of the overall growth of children,
and this class, which continues as an advanced ceramics class during
the second quarter, has allowed students’ imaginations to flourish.
Hawk
Festival is annual fundraiser for Rivergold
Parents
and students alike enjoyed the giant slide, one of the many activities
available at the annual Hawk Festival at Rivergold School. This is the
school’s annual fundraiser sponsored by the school’s PTA
and the Rivergold community.

Students at Rivergold were able to improve

This
Fall students at Rivergold were able to improve their singing and performance
strategies with a unique course taught by Kathy Naumcheff. Students
learned the proper body mechanics of singing and the mathematics behind
music notation. The vocal class culminated with a performance for the
school and many students will be performing at the annual Rivergold
talent show.

Senn, a local gallery owner and artist, assists a Cougar Club member
with stencil art during a recent visit to the after-school program
Jean Senn, a local gallery owner and artist, came to Cougar Club recently
to teach students about making stencil artwork. This was a hands-on
activity and everyone got to learn how to use the stencils and apply
the paint. The children made bookmarks and border prints for the Cougar
Club.
Senn is owner of the Inanna’s Gift Studio-Gallery & Creative
Arts Center in Coarsegold. She volunteered to go to Cougar Club as a
way to show her community involvement.
Cougar Club kids have been decorating the Cougar Club with their artwork.
For a recent drawing contest they invited the Hawk Club at Rivergold.
This contest was a graphic art competition; the students drew in the
Microsoft paint program with a Halloween theme. The winners received
a free movie ticket from the Met Cinema, or a free ice cream cone from
Rite Aid.
The club also has some students entering the Reflections program with
encouragement from the school’s PTA.
For more information about the Cougar Club check their Web link.
Rene’e Medley held her first “Mommy and Me” pre-school
class earlier this month. She served hot cider and they discussed reading
strategies, made a book with the children, and had fun and fellowship
with mommies and daddies too.
Look for more information for future “Mommy and Me” classes.

Sheriff visits
GRETCHEN FRUTH - SIXTH GRADE
On
Friday, October 8, Sheriff Anderson came to visit Ms. Smittle’s
second grade class at Coarsegold School. Her class is learning about
the three branches of government and wrote letters to Sheriff Anderson
inviting him to discuss his job.
Sheriff Anderson talked about his job, taking care of crimes and important
laws like wearing your seat belt. The class had many questions like
how he became sheriff and if he worked with crimes and clues.
When talking about his job and what he did, the students learned about
what kind of people the police deal with. Sheriff Anderson informed
the students that he gets to arrest people who don't obey the laws and
who do bad things to other people and animals.
Ms. Smittle’s class enjoyed their visit with Sheriff Anderson
and even had some laws to share with him.
PowerPoint
EIRENA EWERT - THIRD GRADE
The
second through fourth grade GATE students learned PowerPoint after school
with Mr. Corippo. We made presentations about ourselves. We made pages
on our favorite foods, toys, best friends, pets and favorite sport teams.
It was fun.
