The groundbreaking for the swimming pool complex at Yosemite High
School was held November 10.
“This is a happy day for those of us who have worked long and hard
to see this happen,” commented Yosemite Joint Union High School District
Superinten-dent Bill McCabe. He was surrounded by district trustees,
people from the construction management firm, members of the Pool
Committee and district employees as the first shovels of dirt were
turned. Work is currently underway to build a retaining wall at the
site.
The pool bid was awarded earlier this month at $968,000. Work will
begin as soon as possible. All of the bids for the classroom in the
pool complex were rejected. McCabe says this project will be re-bid
to keep within budget.
A bid was expected to be awarded this week for the 23-classroom building
that will be constructed in front of YHS campus.
The music classroom building is expected to be finished December 10.
When this building is occupied, the current music building will be
renovated into a 400-seat performing arts center.
Work will begin this spring to enhance the track and football area.
An all-weather surface will be put on the track and it will be expanded.
YHS will be hosting home track meets after the improvements are made.
“We are so pleased with the progress,” says McCabe. “Within 18 months
I hope we will be out of the construction business.”
Funds for the construction came from an $11.76 million bond passed
by the local voters in 1998, from state matching funds, grants and
private donations. None of these funds could be used for any purpose
other than construction.
