Students have fun and learn during Red Ribbon Week

Coarsegold Elementary School Celebrated Red Ribbon Week the week of October 20 through October 24 with a variety of activities. This years’ theme was Heroes Stand Up Against Drugs.

Every day, students dressed up to show that they were not going to let drugs be a part of their lives. Monday was Crazy Sock Day. Everyone wore their craziest socks to show that they were going to sock it to drugs.

On Tuesday, everyone donned a crazy hairdo to show that they had better things to “do” than drugs. Wednesday had students and teachers alike wearing their pajamas and slippers. Thursday everyone got out their pocket protectors and dressed up for Nerd day to show the world they were too smart to do drugs.

On Friday there were two rallies where students came together to celebrate their decision to live drug free lives. All of the students wore red to show their school spirit. Classes decorated wagon floats that represented the weeks’ theme. There were two parades so that all of the classes could show off their artistic talents.

Each class had two representatives who described their float and told why the class decided on the theme. The winners for the kindergarten through fourth grades were: third place a tie between Katy Penton’s kindergarten and Josh Jones’ fourth grade class; second place, Rick Cano’s second grade class and Becky Cano’s class came in first place.

The winners for the fifth through eighth grade rally were Vernon Johnson’s class in third place, Kathy Anderson’s eighth grade class in second place and in first place was Robert Jackson’s eighth grade class.

All of the classes put in a lot of time and effort on their floats. Each class showed not only who their heroes were but also that they were able to come up with ideas to occupy their time other than getting involved in drugs and show a great deal of school spirit at the same time.

The week was a great success. Students got a chance to get involved and learn the importance of leading a drug free lifestyle.
