The tale of this production fought its way into being runs a bit like Homer's The Odyssey.
Fresh from the fruitful Trojan War of the fall production, our hero Odysseus, otherwise known as
the YHS Drama program, expected a smooth course home to the spring play. However fate had other plans
...Like Odysseus, we too found ourselves postponed by forces we could neither control or comprehend.
We battled the infamous monsters of time, procrastination and sleep deprivation with only our wits and a
vision of our final destination to guide us. However with the cunning, determination and luck of
Odysseus we prevailed against all odds. Each person involved in this production showed not only
the bravery of an epic hero by daring to produce a play in three weeks; but also the hopeful heart
of such a hero in believing we would succeed.
As a director I have seen this production blossom from the coffee stained pages of Ives' collection
of plays to a living entity. An entity that affects everyone it comes in contact with, whether
through laughter, sighs or lines that run through your mind for the next four days. As Bertolt Brecht
said, "Art is not a mirror, it's a hammer. It does not reflect, it shapes." In the past three weeks I
have seen our art shape the lives and minds of each actor on stage and each crew member in the
wings. All that is left is to let the art that we have collectively created shape you, the
audience.
