A history of the community's efforts to build a swimming pool complex |
|
For many years, there have been efforts from time to time to raise money to build a
swimming pool for the people of the mountain area. Because of the high cost of such a
facility, and the on-going expenses of maintaining it, these efforts have not been successful.
In 1998, the voters within the Yosemite Joint Union High School District approved an $11.76 million bond to renovate and expand Yosemite High School. One of the projects promised in the bond campaign was a swimming pool. At the time the bond passed, the state was matching school bonds 100 percent. The YJUHSD planned a project that would cost approximately $23 million. However, the state rules changed a few months later, basing the state matching funds on need. This almost assured all of the state funds would go to the Los Angeles area. YJUHSD fell to the bottom of the funding list. To date, the district has received $4 million in matching funds from the state and there is no promise of any more money in the immediate future. Commitments have been made for just under half the amount needed to complete the complex. The pool committee is dedicated to raising the balance of funds needed. |
