Tennis court benches built

by students at Raymond

Yosemite High School Report

There are three new benches at the Yosemite High School tennis courts, thanks to students at Raymond Granite High School, an alternative school within the Yosemite Joint Union High School District.

The benches were designed and built by RGHS students Randy Todd and John McFarland under the direction of Jerry Lebovitz, instructor in the construction skills shop at Raymond.

The project was a cooperative effort among the Sierra Tennis Club, RGHS and Yosemite High School. The tennis club and YHS provided the funds to build the benches and the RGHS students did the work.

The new benches replace old ones constructed by students in Dave Dooman’s woodshop at YHS many years ago.

The new benches are constructed of redwood, Douglass fir and Trex, a new composite building material made from recycled plastics and wood fibers.

Mr. Lebovitz says the benches are “built to last, with little or no maintenance.”

Also involved in the project were Albert Strain and Bob Homuth of the Sierra Tennis Club, Stan Lawrence, YHS tennis coach, and RGHS teachers Dennis Otterson and Cindy Happ-Jett.
