Career Skills 2001 Olympics

Four Yosemite High School students
came home winners from the Career Skills 2001 Olympics held in Fresno recently.
This took place during the annual
Fresno City College open house. Students from throughout the valley who are
enrolled in Regional Occupational Program (ROP) classes compete in
action-oriented events ranging from accounting to word processing.
Approximately 30 students attended
from YHS and competed in medical occupations, welding and auto technology.
Ben Armstrong took first place in
the medical terminology competition. Russell Castro placed second in welding
and Bill Petrushkin placed third. Thomas Payne took second in auto technology.
Students took written tests and
skills tests.
In auto, they were required to
demonstrate their skills in precision measuring, component identification,
trouble shooting and checking standards and specifications.
Students who also competed in auto
were Ken Vandenburg, Ben Rowlett, Mike Maxwell, Kyle Robichaux and Luke Bryson.
Mike Monahan is the auto instructor at YHS.
The welding students had to show
their skills in arc welding and oxyacetylene welding. They were given a drawing
with specific instructions which they had to follow. They also took a written
test on metal, tool and rod identification.
Students who also participated
from the welding class were Joey Stewart and Jared Shisler. Joe Mahle is the
instructor.
YHS students competed in
cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as well as in medical terminology.
Students from the Emergency Medical Technology (EMT) class who participated
were Brandon Seigers, Kate Turpin, Mark Stephens, Mark Gilchrist and Jaclyn
Wieczorek. Anthony Misner is the instructor.
Students from Linda Heinbach’s
home economics class attended the event put did not compete.
Medals were awarded to the top
five students in each of the 30 events. About 25 schools competed.
